The Boyfriend Loophole
In America, being married to your domestic abuser offers more protection from gun-violence than if you’re simply dating them. It’s time we change that.
Because of the Boyfriend Loophole, the difference between life and death depends on something as small as a wedding ring. We’ll transform this absurdity into a powerful symbol for change, and create 100 custom made rings that will represent and tell the story of 100 women that were victims of gun-related domestic violence. The rings, along with a kit providing the facts and stories of the women, will be sent to 100 senators to humanize this topic while putting pressure on the importance of their votes to close the Boyfriend Loophole.
We will amplify these 100 women’s stories, and give them a platform to be heard. From custom Pinterest Boards to a curated Spotify Playlist, we’ll share portraits of their humanity on social media. We’ll partner with the New York Times to takeover the wedding section and shine a light on the women behind the rings. We’ll also work with celebrities like Rihanna to raise awareness of the issue on Valentine’s Day. All these activations will create an even broader awareness, and ultimately drive to get more signatures for the change.org petition.
